EyeAmerica spreads awareness through the Diabetes EyeCare Program

With over 17.9 million Americans already suffering from diabetes and another 57 million at risk, EyeCare America aims to spread awareness about the link between diabetes and vision loss during its month long Diabetes Eye Health Month campaign throughout November. Type 1 and type 1- diabetics are at risk of losing their vision due to diabetic retinopathy. According to research, people with diabetes are 25 times more likely to lose their eyesight as compared to those without the disease.

November has been designated as Diabetes Eye Health Month. EyeCare America has taken the opportunity to educate diabetics on the ABCs of diabetes and eye health, where ‘A’ is to inform your eye specialist if you have been diagnosed with diabetes, ‘B’ is to make sure to get your eyes tested regularly, and ‘C’ for senior citizens 65 or older to call 1-800-272-EYES (3937), if they do not have an ophthalmologist, and determine if they quality for EyeCare America’s Diabetes EyeCare Program, which is free of cost.

EyeCare America hopes that these three simple steps will help millions of seniors who may be at risk. According to C. Pat Wilkinson, MD, ophthalmologist and chairman of EyeCare America’s Diabetes EyeCare Program, there are 24,000 new cases of vision loss every year. People need to be aware that the risk of blindness may be reduced by 95 percent if detected early. With proper treatment and follow-up care, there will be a significant reduction in cases of diabetic retinopathy.

Diabetic retinopathy causes the blood vessels to swell and leak fluid. In some instances, there is an abnormal growth of blood vessels on the surface of the retina. There are no early warning signs, however, blurred vision is one of the first signs. To be eligible for EyeCare America’s Diabetes EyeCare Program individuals need to be 65 and older, and U.S. citizens or legal residents. Those who have not seen an ophthalmologist for over three years or do not have insurance through an HMO or the VA are encouraged to join in the program. Those eligible for the program will receive a complete medical eye exam and one year of treatment free of cost, for any disease that may be diagnosed by the initial examination. For further details call 1.800.272.EYES (3937) toll-free, 24 hours a day all through the year.

Why The Sun Is Beneficial For Your Eyes and How You Can Take Advatange It

Several of you may not have heard of the likelihood to rebuild your vision so this might be somewhat surprising for you. Truth is, natural vision improvement is not only possible, it is actually quite straightforward. I went from a dumb myopic teen to practically no specs in around eight months.

Here, I’ll tell you one easy habit I picked up in the first week of starting. I’ll not go into too much specific aspect as a result of restictions of space here but I’ve create a website where I share my experience. Now let us dive into the good stuff.

It is easy to do – simply close your eyes and face the sun then sway your head left to right and back repeatedly. While you doing this, you will feel the warmth of the sun shifts across your face, also you will notice the sun seems to “shift in the opposite way of where you are swinging to.” That means supposing that you’re turning to the left, it might appear to be swinging to the right.

Warning: Don’t do this as long as the sun is glaring and keep in mind not to put on any form of corrective lenses when you are doing this!

So why is sunning useful to improve vision?

1. The warm stream of sunlight calms your eye – and therefore diminish strain that was caused by specs, squinting and forcing your eye open while it’s already exhausted.

2. Bear in mind the opposite movement of the sun I talked about preciously? Motion is essential if you wish to rebuild your vision. The idea is manifold so I will not go in depth here however feel free to drop by my blog if you want to learn how motion influence your vision.

It’s of course that you shouldn’t overdo it. Many people derive most benefit from just sunning five to ten minutes every day, although twenty to thirty minutes of sun exposure is needed for your general health.

Choosing The Right Style Of Eyeglasses For Baby Boomers

Trifocals are like three pairs of glasses in one. Trifocals will provide you with three vision segments, as the name suggests. It may sound challenging to adapt to a pair of trifocals, but it is actually failry simple. Trifocals will offer more visual convenience than bifocals after you have adjusted to them. You can consider this similar to climbing up steps. Rather than jumping straight up to step three, it is easier to use step two. Your eyes will love being able see clearly at three distinct zones.

Rather than prescribing a simple bifocal, people with advanced presbyopia are usually advised to get trifocals from their optician. This is because more advanced presbyoes benefit from a multiple range of corrections. During your eye exam, the doctor will be able to determine what your eyeglass refraction is. The unit of measure used to write an eyeglass prescription is called a diopter.

Bifocals can offer correction only at two ranges of distance, that is to say, near vision or distance vision. Trifocals will offer correction at all ranges of distance. This is the reason trifocals can provide the most clarity at varying distances.

Trifocals are a fantastic option, but for many may be over the top. While not required for all presbyopes, trifocals will satisfy a varying range of visual demands. Most people find the intermediate distance segment the most difficult to adapt to. A spectacle Rx of -4 diopters with a reading add of +3 will produce a reading segment of -1. Given these values, the mid-range correction will be a -2.5.

Trifocals offer a greater range of intermediate and near vision when compared to bifocals. They give you three areas of correction, like a bifocal but with built in intermediate vision.

The lower section of the lens is the portion that will contain the near range of vision correction. The line on your lenses can vary in shape based on your visual demands, your optician can help you decide. The varying segments of the lens are clearly marked with a very thin, yet visible line.

The absolute near vision is corrected by a segment on the bottom of the lens. When fit properly any of these eyeglasses are very easy to adapt to.

The portion of the lens that corrects intermediate vision is directly on top of the full near vision part of the lens. This will not cover the greatest range, intermediate vision is usually described as 2-5 feet from your eyes while near vision is 16 inches.

With a single pair of trifocals, you can tackle all problems related to presbyopia. You might encounter a problem with the lines of demarcation in these specs. If this sounds like you, you may love progressive eyeglasses. They will correct your vision just as well as trifocals. In fact, they are more comfortable as the vision zones are not demarcated with a line. They will give any presbyope the best possible vision.

Eye Twitching

Eye twitching can be caused for many different reasons and none are really that serious.  However eye twitching can become annoying and this is more so when you try to read, write, or watch TV.  If you are experiencing any other symptoms besides the eye twitching the you need to see your doctor to receive a diagnosis and also a check up.

The most common reason for an eye twitch is lack of sleep, fatigue, computer and television screens, lack of vitamins, eye strain, allergies, caffeine, and compressed nerves.  You should have a close look at your lifestyle to see what your eye twitching is caused from.  Sleep fatigue and stress occurring together may cause eye twitching and can cause more symptoms.

Many people say that there is no reason what so ever for eye twitching but this is because there is a list that is so long it is difficult to go through and eliminate some of the causes.  All symptoms listed are the most common reasons for eye twitching but there are some many more also.

When both eyes twitch it is known as blepharospasm, this can be debilitating because both eyes start to sag and it could cause blindness.  This can be a bit more serious if one eye is having this problem, this would be known as a hemifacial spasm.  In these type of cases eye twitching is cured as soon as it has been identified.

So eye twitching really isn’t a really serious issue but it needs to be checked out if you cannot find any reason why it is happening.  If you really feel that your eye twitching is more then just that, go see your doctor.

Yoga For the Eyes – Maintain the Health of Your Eyes

Do you spend a lot of your time staring at that computer screen during work? If this is true, then we are sure you realize just how tiring and draining that can be for your eyes as well as your entire body. For those of you that would like to maintain the health of your eyes, we highly recommend looking into yoga for the eyes. Yes, there is a such thing as eye yoga for vision therapy and it is just starting to become popular today.

When you are doing this, you will need to relax and remove everything from your mind. Basically, it is like any other form of yoga, except you are using your eyes and concentrating on them. Through this form of yoga, you will be improving your visual concentration.

In order to improve that visual concentration, you will need to strengthen it. Find a comfortable place where you can sit with your neck and back straight, but it should not be stiff. Hold your posture for a couple of minutes, then increase that gradually.

Concentrate on gazing at the tip of your nose. During this time, you should not blink. Stay like this for as long as you possibly can. When you’re done, close your eyes and relax. After words check for flashes of time where you see clearly. This is something that happens when you are making progress.

Concentrate on that third eye. While you are doing this, you should not blink. For those of you that do not know, the third eye is that area that is above your nose between your eyebrows. When you have concentrated on it, close your eyes and relax. At first, it may seem hard to do or uncomfortable, but you should not let yourself get frustrated.

You see, there are many forms of yoga for eye exercises to improve vision that you can do. Nearly every single one of them involves the individual concentrating and getting rid of all the stress. When you do this, you will be maintaining the health of your eyes.

Dr Bates and Vision Improvement

Dr. Bates really is a mastermind and his vision improvement techniques are not something that have just surfaced. In fact, Dr. Bates was an eye-care physician from the year 1860 to 1931. He believed that glasses were never necessary and harmful. He stated that all eyesight problems were due to the strain of eyes. As he was an M. D., he published a book along with a magazine, which detailed the approach he takes at helping individuals improve their vision. As we continue forward with this article, we would like to take a closer look at Dr. Bates and vision improvement.

Dr. Bates claimed that you should be able to improve your eyesight with the techniques he had in mind. These techniques were centered around movement and visualization. He would place a lot of attention on imaging letters and marks that were black. He also stated that exposing the eyes to sun would alleviate the strain.

Aldous Huxley, who was a British writer claimed that he used bates meethod and his sight has greatly improved. Many question if his vision was truly improved or not. Despite many reports of successful results, the ‘Bates" techniques have not been proved to improve eyesight.

Bates stated that corrective lenses, which he referred to as "eye crutches" would not cure vision and was only an impediment. He recommended that anyone using glasses should discard them and begin applying his method. He discussed a number of treatments in writing that he claimed would help individuals with their sight.

For one of his techniques, he suggested the patient closing their eyes for a couple of minutes in order to bring about relaxation. He stated that you could increase that relaxation by "palming, " which means covering your eyes with the palms of your hands. Dr. Bates and vision improvement will be considered for many years to come.

Prescription Sunglasses – A Quick Glance

Sunglasses work mainly as protective items and only secondly as decorations. There are however people who cannot buy a pair of sunglasses and enjoy them because they have special eye conditions. Hyperopia, myopia and astigmatism are just a few examples here. The solution for such cases is to be found in prescription sunglasses designed to match exactly the same features of the regular glasses but with ultraviolet protection. The UVB rays cause sunburn while the UVA rays get absorbed by the human eye lens.

Prescription sunglasses represent a combination of regular glasses with a dark lens design. There are different kinds of lenses used for prescription sunglasses, and here we can count polarized lenses, anti-reflective lenses, blue blockers, photochromic lenses and gradient lenses. It is important to mention here, before going on with the description of prescription sunglasses, that you can only order this kind of eyewear based on an ophthalmologist’s recommendation and after careful medical examination. Some health condition such as eye surgery may require total prevention of sun exposure. This is why most often doctors prescribe sunglasses with  99 or 100% protection against UVA and UVB.

Some prescription sunglasses rely on a wraparound design that prevents the UV rays from entering from the sides. Here, the choice of the frame is everything because it should be large enough to allow for such protection. As for the glare, not only designer prescription sunglasses but most sunglasses in general have a special anti-reflective coating that ensures superior reflexion of the light. The amount of light that enters the eyes could also be limited by using mirror-coated lenses. One special mention here is that the design of the prescription glasses also depends on the stage of the eye health condition.

For instance, people who suffer from advanced myopia may require very thick lenses, which could be incompatible with most of the frames. There are other situations when two or more health problems are present, as one person could suffer from both astigmatism and myopia, to give just an example. The doctor should be able to recommend an adequate course of action, with the mention that the design of highly specialized prescription sunglasses is more difficult. Very few companies can provide such designs for low prices; the more complex the prescription sunglasses, the higher the price.

How To Clean Hard Contact Lenses

Hard, or rigid contacts are comprised of material that is known as PMMA (polymethylmethacrylate).  This material is very rigid, and doesn’t contain near as much water as soft contacts.  With that in mind, taking care of and cleaning hard lenses is very different that cleaning and maintaining soft contact lenses.

Before you purchase a pair of hard or rigid contact lenses, you should know how to take care of them and how to clean them.  Hard contacts differ from soft contacts, as the cleaning process is very different.  When you purchase your contacts you should also purchase your cleaning solution.Your cleaner is very important, as you must have it with hard contacts.

The one thing that hard and soft contact lenses have in common, is the fact that you must wash your hands before you handle either of them. You should always wash your hands with soap and water before you handle your hard lenses.  Antibacterial soap is the best soap to use, as it will thoroughly clean your hands and it doesn't contain any type of fragrance.

The first thing to do when cleaning your hard contacts is to take the lens out of your eye and put it in the center of your hand.  You should have your cleaner out, and ready to use anytime you are looking to clean your lenses.  Once you have the lens in the palm of your hand, squirt a couple of cleaning drops into the center of the lens.  Now, gently work the solution into the lens, for a minute or so.You should always avoid using pressure, as you could end up tearing the lens.

Once you have finished cleaning your lens, you'll need to rinse it.  You can rinse hard contact lens using lukewarm water.  These types of lenses are very sturdy and don't require any special liquid or solution for rinsing. When you have finished cleaning and rinsing your contacts, simply put them back in the case and fill it with the solution that you have for soaking your hard lenses in.  The soaking solution will keep your contacts fresh, and clean the protein off of them that can build up from wear.

Getting Comfort With Your Contact Lenses

If you don’t take care of your contact lenses, they can do you more harm than good.  Contact lenses are a very popular alternative to corrective vision, and they can really help your eyes if you take care of them.  There are ways that you can get the most from your contacts, and ensure that they remain comfortable for as long as you wear them.  Below, you will find some tips on how to get the best from your contacts.

To ensure that your contact lens remain healthy, you should always replace them as required by the manufacturer or type of contacts you are using. Most types of contacts need to be replaced every 2 weeks, and replaced with a fresh pair.  If you are using daily disposable lenses, you should always throw them away before you go to sleep, then wake up to a fresh new pair in the morning.

Another common mistake people make, that can easily damage or affect contacts, is swapping them with other people. You should never swap your contacts, even with a family member or friend.  No matter how well you know the person, you should never switch contacts with them.  Swapping contacts can damage your eyes, in the terms of protein and contact shape/power.

Anytime your eyes start to bother you, you should take your contacts out and allow your eyes time to rest.  Normally, if your contacts are causing irritation, allowing your eyes ample time to rest will correct the problem. If it happens to be more than just tired eyes or irritation, you should leave your contacts out until you can schedule an appointment with your optician and get them checked.

Before you handle your contact lens, or put them in your eyes, you should always wash your hands with soap and water, and dry them thoroughly.  If you handle your contacts with dirty hands, you could easily get dirt or debris on your lenses and transfer that dirt that you put on the lens into your eye – which could result in an eye infection. If your hands aren't clean, you can also scratch or tear your contact lens, which can do damage to your eyes, possibly even scratch the cornea.

Caring For Your Contacts

Its no secret that contact lenses are the best alternative to glasses.  They are easy to use, although they must be taken care of.  There are several ways that you can take care of your contact lenses, which will ensure that they stay healthy and remain comfortable when you wear them.

Before you put your contacts in, the first thing to do is wash your hands with soap and warm water.  You should also make sure that you dry your hands thoroughly with a clean towel, as soap residue or chemicals may get on the contacts, causing them to be very uncomfortable and possibly even burning your eyes when you put them in.

If you can't seem to get your contact lens to go in your eyes, you shouldn't force them.  Instead, you should put some solution in the palm of your hand, and gently rub the contact in the solution.  Then, before you put it back in your eyes, you should put some solution on it and it should go in your eye without any complications.

Anytime you are not wearing your contact lenses, you should always soak them in fresh solution.  This is especially important overnight, as the solution gets the protein out of your contacts.  If you don’t soak them in solution, they can end up causing damage to your eyes.

If you experience any type of burning with your contacts after soaking them in solution, you should try another solution.  Depending on your eyes, some types of solutions may leave you with a burning sensation.  This is very common, although switching to a different contact lens solution will more than likely stop the burning or irritation.

Throughout the day, you may need to use rewetting drops or saline solution to keep moisture in your eyes.Sometimes, contacts can dry your eyes out, and make them feel very uncomfortable.  When you put some drops or saline in them though, the dryness will normally subside.  You should always keep some rewetting drops or saline with you at times, just in case your eyes start to dry out.

Finding the Beauty Tips that are the Best for Eyebrows

Look no further, here are the best beauty tips for your eyebrows. Whether you wax, tweeze or prefer to never do it yourself at all, you can never have too many options when it comes to beautiful eyebrows. Your eyebrows really say a lot about and for you. You should always have the best look for your face and money.

I personally like to invest in a really great treatment about once a month. I will do my own maintenance when they need it. I’ve found that is the best way to keep my brows looking good and my budget in line. However, not everybody is the same. The following are some of the best beauty tips for your eyebrows that will always keep you looking good (whether or not you do it yourself):

* Brow Beauty Tips #1: Match your face and brows. - Normally, brows start at the top of your nose where a line would be if you drew it vertically up the side of your nose. Locating this spot is easy, just hold a pencil alongside your nose. The outside corner of your eye is where they should end. However, you can easily make eyes set close together look farther apart by leaving a lot more space between brows. In the same fashion, wide set eyes can be compensated for by bringing brows in closer. Do not go overboard and draw in a unibrow, though!

* Brow Beauty Tip #2: Numb up before plucking with a little anbesol. - Anbesol is made for toothaches, but it can also get you through a plucking session easily. It used to hurt so bad I could only do half a brow. Now, its so much easier to get all the way through one session.

* Brow Beauty Tips #3: You should only pluck from underneath. - Beauticians will usually wax over and under your brows. But, you should only maintain them from below. Or else, you can accidentally completely destroy your natural or created arch. Leave the rest to the professionals and just clean up underneath. If you want to do this yourself, you may want to have someone draw in some guidelines before you begin plucking from above.

I have been using these brow beauty tips for years and you to can use them to get really beautiful eyebrows.

How To Improve Eyesight Naturally

Some folks sit in front of the computer and play software games all day. Some read books in their bed, almost all of the time in dim lights. Some abhor carrots. A few people read very little words most of the time. Some forget to squint their eyes while they are in front of their TV sets or watching movies but some of them still have impressive vision. There are other people who take care of their eyes in every which way they can but they will be surprised to find out that their vision is not that clear as compared before. Why is that? Was it due to genetics or are they simply the lucky bunch of people who really have good eyesight? But whatever it is, anyone should be aware on how to improve eyesight when the need arises.

You have been reading while lying down, you have been playing PC games all day, you have been reading something while in dim lights and now, you are looking for ways on how to improve eyesight. If only you have been taking care of your eyes before, you won’t have a problem looking for a treatment or a solution in improving your eyesight.

Frankly speaking, if you ask other people, there is no way to improve your eyesight except if you decide to undergo eye surgery and specifically, a LASIK eye surgery. So, what is the meaning of LASIK? LASIK means Laser Assisted In Situ Keratomileusis. It is a type of eye surgery to reshape cornea and improve your visual acuity. With LASIK eye surgery, many people have achieved better vision without having to wear glasses or contact lenses and the procedure involves using laser to reshape the cornea. But before that, a sharp blade called microkeratome is used to slice the flap off to expose the cornea and then, laser is followed to reshape the cornea. For most people, this can be the best remedy for eyesight or to improve it. However, it should not be considered as the only best because right now, there is another way to improve your eyesight and it’s a natural and safe way without any medications or surgeries. Do you want to learn how? You sure know what to do, right.

Just like any other contact lens from Acuvue, the Acuvue advance contact lenses offer you plenty of quality and reliability.  They are a cut above the rest, offering you excellent quality and comfort for a very affordable price.

The first thing you’ll notice about the Acuvue advance lenses is the addition of Hydroclear, made by Johnson and Johnson.Although other types of Acuvue lenses now offer Hydroclear, the advance lenses were the first.  Hydraclear is a break through in contact lens technology, perfect for those who have problems with their lenses drying out.  This technology is considered to be among the best - and ideal for anyone who wants the best for their eyes.

Hydraclear is a rich moisture type element that is found throughout the exterior and interior of Acuvue advance contact lenses, helping to give them a soft, silky feel.Once you put a pair of advance lenses in your eyes, you'll notice the benefits of Hydraclear immediately.  It doesn’t dry out like other contact lens, keeping your eyes refreshed while you wear them.

Acuvue advance contacts also offer you great protection as well.  They offer the highest type of UVA blocking and UV ray protection available for contact lenses.  You can enjoy wearing these contacts anywhere you go, which is great for those who travel.  If you like to go to the beach you can rest assured in knowing that the Acuvue advance lenses will keep your eyes protected from the sun while you enjoy the beauty of the beach.

Acuvue advance contacts are made from a soft yet flexible material, which makes them a breeze to put in your eyes.  There shouldn’t any trouble putting them in your eyes, which makes them ideal for anyone who wears contact lenses.Simply put them in your eyes, and they will automatically conform themselves to your pupils, feeling comfortable from the start.
